Odd wild bird behavior?

For a little over a week I've notice the same bird standing in the same spot in my backyard. Not once in the last week have I looked outside and he's NOT standing there. Seems like odd, compulsive behavior. The bird is medium brown, white belly and a white/black head. I live in Upstate NY. Any bird experts out there that can explain why this is... or any theories. The only thing I could think of is maybe she had a nest and a crow or something came along and took her babies, but not sure it's the right time of year for that theory. Curious...
